Morgan Park United Methodist Church
138th Anniversary Celebration
Sunday, May 25th, 2025
Morgan Park United Methodist Church held its first Sunday service on May 22nd, 1887, with forty-two persons in attendance. The church was formed at the urging of a devout Methodist, Dr.William Henry German, aided by another founding member, Frank Robinson.
The congregation built their first church at Prospect and Homewood Avenues, at a cost of $2,000.00. By the church’s 25thAnniversary in 1912, the congregation had outgrown the little church on Prospect Avenue, and had laid the cornerstone for a new church on Longwood Drive. The new 65,000 square foot church was completed in 1913, at a cost of $47,714.00.
By 1924, the church had grown to 1,000 members, and set a goal of 1,500 members by 1929. Although growth slowed during the depression and war years, Morgan Park United Methodist Church has continued to be a pillar of faith in Morgan Park, with long-time ministries in the community, and members who were leaders in fostering the growth and stability of the community.
Over the years, many faithful and committed members have loved the church and nurtured their fellow members and the ministries of the church. We are a warm and welcoming, diverse people of faith, who seek to faithfully minister to all of God’s children, with no exclusions.
Now, as we celebrate 138 years in ministry, the church faces new challenges. We pray that God will sustain us and guide us, so that we may continue to serve others and build up God’s kingdom.
